Azor

rasin

Azor was the stage name of Lénord Fortuné (1965–2011), a rasin singer and master drummer who led Racine Mapou de Azor. He grew up in a family where Vodou, singing, and drumming were already part of daily life. He began singing and playing drums young, worked with the Bakoulou folkloric troupe and Racine Kanga de Wawa, and then founded Racine Mapou with his brother Tinonm.

With Racine Mapou, Azor brought a form of rasin that stayed close to drums, congas, chorus, and Vodou song into public performance. The group helped music often heard in lakou and peristyle settings travel to stages, radio, records, and international tours. His voice and drumming connected celebrations of the lwa, popular memory, and commentary on Haitian life.

Azor died on July 16, 2011, but his influence remains audible in rasin music. This page gathers recordings that credit Azor as artist; the Racine Mapou de Azor page preserves the identity of the group he led.
