KASSAV'

zouk

Kassav' is the band that turned zouk into an international musical language. The project began in 1979 around Pierre-Édouard Décimus, Georges Décimus, Freddy Marshall, and Jacob Desvarieux, with the idea of taking Guadeloupean and Martinican rhythms such as gwo ka, ti bwa, mendé, and Antillean dance music and adapting them to modern studio techniques. Before it was a full band, Kassav' was a concept.

With Jacob Desvarieux, Jocelyne Béroard, Jean-Philippe Marthély, Patrick Saint-Éloi, Jean-Claude Naimro, Claude Vamur, Georges Décimus, and other musicians, Kassav' gave the Francophone Caribbean a fast, percussion-forward, horn-driven sound built for large stages. 'Zouk La Sé Sèl Médikaman Nou Ni', from the album 'Yélélé', became a turning point in the 1980s, while albums such as 'An-Ba-Chen'n La', 'Vini Pou', 'Majestik Zouk', and 'Tékit Izi' carried zouk through France, Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, Japan, and the Indian Ocean.

Kassav' is not a Haitian band, so it should not be treated as a local HMI artist in chart logic. But it is essential in a Haiti-focused collection because kompa, zouk, kompa-zouk, and Haitian Creole balladry are constantly in conversation. Much of modern HMI, from kompa love to diaspora music, still carries vocal, bass, keyboard, and stage-energy traces that Kassav' helped make possible.
