Tonymix

rabòday

Tonymix, born Thony Mahotière, is one of the DJs most important to the rise of modern rabòday inside Haitian popular music. From Port-au-Prince/Carrefour, he began DJing in the mid-2000s, moved through the Sound Design and Barikad Crew environment, and became a figure of radio, stage, mixtapes, carnival, and viral video. The title 'DJ Peyi a' works because he does not only play music; he reads the crowd.

His role in rabòday is catalytic. After G-Dolph and other producers helped form the frantic post-2010 earthquake sound, Tonymix pushed rabòday into parties, clubs, radio, neighborhoods, and the diaspora. He blends rap, dancehall, carnival, and street music until the sound becomes a public movement. 'Fe Wana Mache', 'Anba Dekonb', 'Lave Lè A', 'Ayibo Ayiba', 'Mete Mete', 'Travay', 'Pizi Pizi', 'Banm On Lòt', and collaborations with Yani Martelly, Blondedy Ferdinand, Kenny Haiti, T-Babas, DJ Roger, and others show how he makes beats, slogans, dance, and crowd response work together.

Tonymix matters because rabòday would not have grown the same way without DJs who knew how to circulate it. He is not always the lead singer, but he organizes the moment: which phrase catches, which beat lifts the crowd, which remix reaches phones, and which song becomes a carnival season. That role places him near the center of Haiti's urban sound.
