Weena La Chanteuse

Weena La Chanteuse, born Nadine Narcisse in Petion-Ville, is one of the artists who most directly ties Haitian roots music to Vodou memory and performance. She began singing, dancing, and appearing on stage in school cultural programs, then aligned herself with an older line of traditional artists including Toto Bissainthe, Mambo Lucienne, Carole Demesmin, Wawa, and Azor. After moving to the United States, she continued to sing, dance, and paint, describing herself not simply as a singer but as an 'ounguenikon' or Vodou voice. Songs such as "Simbi," "M' damou," "Twelve One Ten," and "Ogou" show how central spiritual and cultural continuity is to her work, while newer digital releases appear under the name Manbo Weena on projects such as "Klemezin" and "Lanmou Nan Vodou".
