Zenglen

kompa

Zenglen is one of modern kompa's great schools: a band where important musicians pass through, learn, leave a mark, and continue shaping HMI after they move on. The story begins in the late 1980s, in a circle of young musicians around Jean Brutus Dérissaint, Garry Didier Perez, and Patrick Martineau in Port-au-Prince. The name Zenglen comes from the image of tiny pieces of broken glass, but the music does the opposite: it gathers pieces of several generations.

The first major step was 'Koule Tan' in 1989, followed by 'Fidèl', which made the band one of the key names of the early 1990s. In that song, faithfulness was not only a romance theme; it became a mission statement for a group trying to modernize kompa, sharpen its production, and open it to more social subjects. When many members left after the early U.S. tours, Brutus remained the fixed point, rebuilding the team and keeping the Zenglen idea alive.

Zenglen does not depend on one era or one singer; its strength is transmission. Gracia Delva, Richie, Reginald Cangé, Kenny Desmangles, Dener Ceide, Shoomy, Fréro, and other names connected to Zenglen make it feel like an institution. Albums such as Easy Konpa, Let It Groove, Do It Right, 5 Etwal, 5ème Vitesse, and No Dead End show how the band balances romance, social critique, taboo subjects, and solid dance craft.

Inside HMI, Zenglen functions like a university: many musicians pass through it or orbit around it before carrying their own projects forward. But the institution also carries tension: singer changes, splits, returns, and a constant fight for stability. That makes the catalog important beyond nostalgia. '5 Dwèt', 'Fidel', 'Flannè Femèl', 'Ti Poud', 'Greve Bèbè', 'Child Support', 'Sincerely Yours', '5 Kontinan', and '3 Danje' show a band able to hold dance music, social reflection, and family memory together.
