“Gran Manjè” is one of the tracks binding King Kessy’s name to Koudjay in the memory of Haitian roots music. The Topic version appeared in 2018, after Samba Kessy’s death in 2016, and approaches nine minutes. Its title uses the image of a great eater, chan pwen language able to point toward power and greed without becoming flat speech. Drums, guitars, and voice keep the criticism moving. That was King Kessy’s strength: placing dignity, anger, and politics inside music a crowd could dance to.
