“Gran Gosye” is Koudjay’s track for Haiti’s 2001 carnival, although this video copy was uploaded in 2009. Its title targets people with enormous appetites, a chan pwen image able to suggest food, money, or power without naming anyone directly. Across more than six minutes, King Kessy and the band use roots drums, rara, repetition, and humor to move criticism through the street. That is Koudjay’s strength: a crowd can dance with the phrase before fully measuring the political and social points beneath the joke.
