Konsa

by Phyllisia Ross · 2014 · rnb · 3:51 · Haitian Creole, English

Konsa is a Kreyòl title on an R&B record, and the direction matters. The common move is a Haitian artist putting an English word on a kompa track to widen its reach; this is the other way round — a singer with the full American R&B vocabulary choosing to speak Creole. The vocal is soft, but the song keeps enough rhythm not to be only a ballad. Three minutes fifty-one, released in 2014, and the sensibility stays hers while the language carries it closer to home.
