Zenglen calls the track “Tempo,” a word that controls speed but can also describe how a band organizes its energy. For a kompa group, that is not a minor technical detail. Tempo determines how dancers find their steps, how bass locks with percussion, and how much room a vocal line has to breathe. This 2011 recording runs seven minutes and forty-six seconds, enough for Zenglen to turn the idea into a demonstration. Rather than a short cut that merely names rhythm, it gives the ensemble time to live inside it. The bpierre201 upload preserves a piece in which the musical method itself becomes the title.
