Djakout #1
kompa
Djakout #1 comes from a longer legacy than its current name. Its roots run back to Djakout Mizik, a movement strengthened by the meeting of Djakout Band and Mizik-Mizik in the late 1980s. With Gracia Delva in the earlier major chapters, Claude Marcelin in writing and graje, Roro Lainé on drums, Shabba as showman, and later Pouchon Duverger as the central singer, the group became one of the central forces of nouvelle génération kompa.
Djakout built its name with a 'djaz lari' sound different from many bands chasing overly polished studio finish. Konpa sources emphasize how the group wanted to keep live energy on record: more movement, more crowd, more performance, more language that speaks to people in yards, clubs, carnival, and the diaspora. 'Manniguéta' is one of the key markers of that approach: rough-edged, street-level, rhythmic, and still melodic.
Djakout has always carried two connected faces. At dances, it can handle romance, jealousy, and relationships with melodic precision. In carnival, it becomes a street machine: hard-hitting lines, percussion and keyboard punches that move the crowd, and a willingness to enter HMI rivalries directly. Albums and songs such as 'Moso Lanmou', '7ième Ciel', 'La Familia', 'Biznis Pa'm', 'Pwofite', 'Lòd Nan Dezòd', 'Nou Pap Dòmi Deyò', 'Bag La', and 'Libre' show the band moving between romance, mass energy, and public statement.
Djakout #1's role in Haitian music is not only about hits. It is a stage school: a place where singers, musicians, fans, and rivalries build HMI's collective memory. Even as members change, and even when some leave to create projects such as EKIP, the Djakout name remains a symbol of a big band able to make Haiti dance, speak loudly, take a position, and return with the same street-level force.
