Wyclef Jean

hip-hop, rasin, kompa

Wyclef Jean is one of the artists who made a Haitian reference audible to a huge global hip-hop audience. Born in Croix-des-Bouquets, he left Haiti as a child, passed through Brooklyn, and grew up in Newark, where rap, church, guitar, production, and diaspora language shaped him.

With the Fugees, he helped make 'The Score' a defining 1990s rap moment; as a solo artist, he treated music as a passport between hip-hop, reggae, soul, kompa, rara, and pop. His best work does not simply name Haiti; it puts migration, faith, poverty, pride, and solidarity inside the song.

The new official sources add material that shows how he keeps moving across eras and formats: 'Gvnman Shift Soundboy Mash Up', 'Stop The Hatred' with MC Jin, and 'Freedom' live at FestiVoix 2026. They place Wyclef back in the same line between music, message, and performance.

'Jaspora', 'Lady Haiti', 'President', and many collaborations show an artist constantly negotiating between global celebrity and child of the country. Wyclef is the bridge from lakou and church to MTV, U.S. radio, and the diaspora imagination.
