Ayiti (Bang Bang)
by Carimi · 2009 · kompa, kanaval · 4:35 · Haitian Creole, French
“Ayiti (Bang Bang)” puts the country's name first and lets a sound follow it. On the 2009 album Buzz, Carimi — Carlo Vieux, Richard Cavé and Mickael Guirand — works kompa and kanaval together across four minutes and thirty-five seconds. The kanaval shape asks for a crowd, repetition and a line anyone can carry. When a band puts “Ayiti” in the title it takes on a weight: the song becomes somewhere to put what people feel about the country.
