Carimi
kompa
Carimi is one of the essential bands for understanding 2000s kompa. The name comes from Carlo Vieux, Richard Cavé, and Mickael Guirand: Ca-Ri-Mi. HMI sources place the band's formation in New York in the early 2000s, when the three musicians were students trying to bring Haitian experience, Kdans, church training, music education, and diaspora life into one sound.
The band arrived as a new generation that understood both traditional dance-band audiences and early digital-era promotion. 'Bang Bang' gave the name momentum, but 'Nasty Biznis' made Carimi's language clearer: relationships, Haiti's crisis, immigration, insecurity, jealousy, pleasure, and a tighter style of kompa arrangement. 'Ayiti Bang Bang' was not only a hook; it sounded like a statement about Haiti in a difficult period. 'Bo Kote'w', 'Kita Nago', 'Buzz', 'Sak Fèt Nan Carimi', 'Are You Ready', 'Baby I Miss You', and 'Ill Yayad' show the same ability to make danceable records that still carry collective memory.
Carimi worked because the three personalities were distinct. Richard Cavé brought arrangements, keyboards, songwriting, and a melodic sense that became central to the sound. Mickael Guirand became the stage face and the voice that could hold a crowd. Carlo Vieux strengthened the keyboard color, production, and musical direction. Together they became a bridge between older kompa expectations and an audience raised on R&B, hip-hop, online video, and diaspora radio.
When Carimi broke up in 2016, after Mickael Guirand announced he would no longer be available for performances, the influence did not disappear. Richard Cavé continued with Kaï, Mickael Guirand with VAYB, and Carlo Vieux remained a lasting reference for sound and arrangement. Carimi is still one of the measuring points for what modern kompa meant before the streaming era fully took over.
