Rete La
by Rutshelle Guillaume · 2020 · kompa, rnb · 5:10 · Haitian Creole
Rete La is one of Rutshelle Guillaume's major romantic statements, and its force is in restraint: a voice holding desire, vulnerability and certainty in the same phrase without letting any of the three take over. Drawn from Quoi Qu'il Advienne, it makes modern kompa feel private without weakening the hook, which is harder than it sounds — intimacy usually costs a song its chorus. Guillaume has built a career on putting women at the centre of kompa and zouk storytelling, and doing it with control rather than volume. Five minutes here are spent proving the distinction.
