Je Suis
by Rutshelle Guillaume · 2016 · kompa, zouk · 3:40 · Haitian Creole, French
Rutshelle Guillaume placed “Je Suis” on her own channel in January 2016. The French title begins an identity statement without completing it in metadata: I am. That opening gives her voice room to say who she is rather than letting others define her. Across more than three and a half minutes, kompa and zouk carry a performance from the early years after Emotions. Rutshelle already centers women in the narrative, with strength coming from control and phrasing. “Je Suis” sounds like an introduction and a claim to the right to name oneself.
