Calypso
by Joé Dwèt Filé · 2021 · zouk · 9:55 · Haitian Creole, French
Nine minutes fifty-five. Calypso is a musical short film rather than a music video, and the difference is the whole point: Joé Dwèt Filé uses the format to put romance, image and zouk/kompa-R&B atmosphere inside a visual story. It is by some distance the longest thing he has here, and he chose that length while also making records like I Don't Know, which runs two minutes thirty-seven. An artist who can do both is telling you that length is a tool rather than a habit.
