1+1
by Naika · 2023 · pop · 3:37 · English, Haitian Creole
A title that is an arithmetic statement sets the terms: 1+1 is about two people and declines to complicate the sum. Naïka works in diaspora pop that keeps Caribbean warmth while staying legible to listeners who have never heard kompa — simple melody, smooth production, Haitian identity present inside the frame rather than announced on top of it. Born in Miami to a mother with Haitian roots, she describes herself as a Third Culture Kid, formed between places rather than inside one, and the song is what that sounds like when it is a starting point instead of a problem to solve.
