Michaël Brun

kompa, rara, electronic, dancehall

Michaël Brun is one of the clearest examples of a Haitian producer making Haiti audible on a global stage without sanding away its accent. Born in Port-au-Prince, he learned violin and piano as a child, began making mash-ups with DJ software as a teenager, and first moved toward pre-med studies before music took over. That story matters because it explains the precision of his work: he treats electronic music not as a mask, but as a tool for placing drums, rara, kompa, dancehall, R&B, and pop in the same space.

His records are not just dance tracks with a Caribbean tint; they put Haitian voices, language, and memory at the center of the sound. 'Bayo' began as a gathering idea, a block party rooted in Haiti that became an international event series. 'LOKAL' (2019) turned the same mission into an album: blending rara, kompa, hip-hop, reggaetón, house, and collaborations to show how Haiti can speak with Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and global pop.

Brun also matters as a curator. He connects the Haitian bal, the lakou, the festival stage, global radio, and the streaming-generation playlist; he creates room for voices such as Rutshelle Guillaume, J Perry, John Legend, Naïka, Saint Levant, Lolo Zouaï, J Balvin, Bounty Killer, and others to enter one conversation. His work with J Balvin on 'Colores' added a Latin Grammy to his production story, but his deeper signature is making Haitian pride sound open, collective, and contemporary.

Recent pieces such as 'Grenadye Alaso! (Haiti World Cup Tribute)', 'Agua', 'Sak Pase', 'Coming Your Way', 'Touchdown', and the 'FAMI VOL. 1' project show how he can turn national memory, football, language, and diaspora into musical events. Michaël Brun is a global musician, but what makes him different is not distance from Haiti; it is the way he makes Haiti a center of gravity.
