Zafem

kompa, twoubadou

Zafem is the collaboration of Dener Céide and Réginald Cangé, two names already carrying major weight in modern kompa history. The project formally entered HMI in 2019 after the two musicians began working together in 2017, and the launch messaging framed it as something new, innovative, and different while still serving Haitian music. Dener brings the experience of a guitarist, composer, arranger, and producer; Réginald brings a mature voice marked by blues, prayer, diction, and narrative weight.

Zafem did not come from nowhere. Dener and Réginald had already passed through major HMI schools: Zenglen, Fasil, many collaborations, important stages, and years of learning what makes a song last. Zafem.net often leans on the idea of the crossroads: the place where provincial roots, city life, political experience, family memory, and musical destiny meet. In that sense, the name Zafem carries a declaration: it is their affair, but it also becomes the affair of kompa fans waiting for an adult, elaborate, emotional sound.

The first major public moments, including the 2023 New York Grand Première at Melrose Ballroom and the album 'Lalin Ak Solèy', show a band that built anticipation instead of chasing the market. Coverage of the premiere describes two nights where the diaspora filled the room, with staging that let the musicians, arrangements, and technical level speak. It was a way of making kompa feel like a prestige event, not only a dance.

The music leaves space: guitar lines, vocals that breathe, lyrics searching for depth, and a balance of kompa, twoubadou, roots feeling, and balladry. 'Le Plein', 'Sanpousan', 'Dlo Dous', 'Savalou', 'Ala De Ka', 'Lalin Ak Solèy', 'Dyaman Nan Bidonvil', 'M Pap Fè Silans', and 'M Pap Ka Neye' make Zafem one of the most sophisticated reference points in current HMI.

Zafem matters because it proves Haitian popular music can remain elegant, adult, and technically rich without becoming cold. It is music for listeners who care about arrangement, voice, story, and cadence, with Dener and Réginald acting as architects of a new kompa chapter: less noise, more precision, more meaning.
